What is an USB extender

The limitations of USB peripheral devices imposed due to distance with USB cables can be eliminated with the help of a USB Extender. There are available three categories of the extender in the market which are the Cat5 extender, the wireless extender and the fiber optic extender.

The inexpensive Cat5 extender allows USB peripheral extension up to 150 feet over Cat5e cables. The extender is made up of two units, namely the receiver and the local transmitter. This extender is great as it would never need any other drivers or even devices to run it. It doesn’t even need any additional software as you just have to plug it in and play it. There are 2 kinds of models which are used by us, namely a 4-port powered extender and a 1 port extender.

Another Cat5 version, the USB Extender operates over Cat 5 cables and supports USB 2.0 peripheral devices. It operates at a speed up to 480 Mb/s and allows a distance range of up to 330 feet. The availability of the product varies however, generally the point to point version which consists of four ports so that at a time 4 devices can be extended. In addition to that, if you are using the high quality USB cables, the device can be successfully used up to a hundred feet. This is the magic of the new USB extender which is wireless. It is made by the most advanced and latest engineering techniques. The sender unit has to attach with the computer or any other source which provides with USB facility. From here, signals are transferred to the receiver. That’s how we can use four devices at one time. One of the major advantages of using the USB extender is that it eliminates clutter caused due to wires and saves desktop space.
